LeBron Come to Chicago and Enjoy the Great Food…and Da Bulls!

Okay. This is my last ditch effort to get LeBron James to Chicago. My open letter to him follows:

LeBron,

Come to Chicago and be part of the biggest revolution to hit this city since the Bulls won 6 NBA Championships in the Jordan era. Ohh yeah you can put Chicago on top of the basketball world again with the best supporting cast you could choose tonight. If you want your billion dollar empire you need to win rings for any of it to become a reality. Wade and Bosh will not bring you a championship in Miami. They simply do not have a supporting cast that would take you guys far into the playoffs, not to mention you would be playing 40-44 minutes every game. Your career will end sooner than you would like. So please come to Chicago and play with people that actually have heart and determination to win a championship. Plus you could eat some great street food after all those wins.

Thanks in advance,
Chicago Food Carts

Splice Kitchen: Shared space for cooking entrepreneurs

Splice Kitchen shares its ovens and cooking equipment with food entrepreneurs that may not have the capitol to open up their own establishments. The city of Chicago makes it difficult for small food start-ups to get the proper space and permits for their idea. Splice Kitchen allows anyone for $25 an hour to use their kitchen and space to host parties, events or to take with them for their respective business. Check out the video by Enterprise City below.

More support to help bring food carts to Chicago

Thanks to all who have shown their support to help bring mobile food to the streets of Chicago. Over the past few months Flirty Cupcakes (Kudos to Tiffany and your team!) has launched with much success and a ton of press has been covering the issue. We just got word that we will be featured in the Lincoln Park Chamber of Commerce’s e-newsletter tomorrow showing all the support they have received for us.  Here are a few more comments we received from you:

What types of food would you like to see served from food carts?

You said:

– Like in NYC there are hot dog carts every block. Here I can’t find a Chicago style hot dog unless I go sit down somewhere. It’s lacking Chicago!

– Mexican!! Lived in L.A. and there were those awesome late night Mexican “roach coaches” we had all the time.

– Breakfast stuff for those commuters maybe

– Tacos, Vietnamese street food, GOOD hot dogs, chili and soups, Costa/Peurto Rican sandwiches

– Pizza, Hot dogs, Italian beef, Hannah’s Bretzel’s, XOCO, empanadas, pho, …..everything!

– Everything.

– Anything but hot dogs. The more creative the better.

– You can never go wrong with the Chicken Pita, Knish, Falafel, etc, the typical NYC food cart meals. The Hispanic neighborhoods it right with the Tacos, Tamales, and Elotes’. Chicago is the Midwestern melting pot, and most of these countries have outdoors markets and street cart vendors, why shouldn’t we. I think we should cover the spectrum for
the elasticities that make up our city!

– BBQ and hot dogs, fruit trucks, heck anything good and cheap.

Do you want to see food carts on the streets of Chicago?

You said:

– Yes!! Come on this is a Major city and we are getting the beat down from NYC and stupid L.A.!

– Yes, random corner carts could be great in certain neighborhoods

– In strategic locations that make sense with traffic and pedestrian considerations so that it provides a needed service and not annoyance to local residents and businesses.

– Of course! Food carts make people happy!! They make me happy!!

Keep the comments coming to help bring food carts to the streets of Chicago
so we can enjoy all the great culturally diverse food this city has to offer.

Top Chefs Kevin Gillespie and Mike Isabella thoughts on food carts in Chicago

The Top Chef Tour made its way to Chicago Thursday and Friday and I visited the 1:30pm demo. During the Q&A session an audience member asked, just before I could, about what Kevin and Mike thought on bringing mobile food to the streets of Chicago. And to no one’s surprise they were all for it.

Mike Isabella has a restaurant in DC and said that food carts are everywhere on the streets and vendors just tweet where they are going to be located that day. Kevin Gillespie thought that food carts would get people to try new and different food and food carts are a perfect way to showcase a few treasures from all sorts of cultures; Plus most food carts only serve about three choices for reasonable prices.

One point that I am glad was brought up is that the common misconception about food carts is that they hinder people from actually going to restaurants in that particular city. Kevin stated food carts actually champion the likelihood of someone going to an actual restaurant. What are your thoughts?

Chicago street vendors push to reform city laws

We found an article in the Chicago Tribune this morning that tells a story of a few street vendors on the city’s near south side and the struggles they encounter while jumping through Chicago’s street food laws. Read the entire article on Chicago’s street vendors push to reform laws.

What are your thoughts on Chicago’s street food laws? Should they be more liberal? Chime in.

Tell your alderman you want street food—now!

This is the copy of the letter I sent to alderman Daniel S. Solis of the 25th Ward in Chicago. The letter was taken from Street Food Now, a Time Out Chicago movement to help bring mobile food trucks to the city of Chicago.

Here it is and if you live in Chicago and would like to do the same, please do so by looking up your alderman and copying the letter  and send it to their respective email address. You can find all of their information clicking here.

—————————————

Dear Daniel S. Solis,

Do you eat? Then I need your help.

Food trucks are booming across America, bringing communities together in the name of creative, affordable food.

If you’re not aware of this trend, that’s understandable—this is an area where Chicago lags far behind cities such as Portland, OR, Seattle and New York.

But you can help us catch up.

See, Chicago has an unusual law that mobile food vendors can sell only pre-packaged food and cannot cook food on-site. Thereby, the only food trucks that are legal are nothing more than roving heat lamps. That’s not a safe environment for food. Nor is it a delicious one.

Chicago chefs are ready and eager to hit the streets and cook out of kitchens that are inspected just like restaurants. (In fact, one chef already has, but he’s getting hassled—click here to read more).

But they can’t do it until an alderperson (such as yourself) steps forward to support the movement by calling a public hearing on this issue and sponsoring an amendment to the current legislation, allowing food truck vendors to operate in Chicago as they do in countless other cities: as fully inspected, fully licensed mobile kitchens.

Mobile food vendors such as food trucks will strengthen our city’s economy, restaurant scene and international reputation. Therefore, we’re asking that you introduce legislation that will get these laws changed.

Together, we can make Chicago a better place. And eat some delicious street food while we’re at it.

Thank you,
